I know it's a little late to be recommending summer anime, but Princess Tutu totally fits the bill. It's only 26 eps long, it's fluffy at the beginning and then it gets kind of teary at the end. Like a summer movie that lasts a whole month, but with more classical music and less pants.

Also it spawned a most damnedly superior AMV, for those who haven't seen it:

I think it won a couple awards.

Anyway, this is Princess Kraehe just hangin' with a crow. She's the daughter of the hero-prince's adversary, the Great Raven, hence the slightly-skanky black-feather getup. Yey for skankerinas.

I took a lot of artistic liberty with this and added dancer muscles to her little waify figure XD Sorry if I freak anyone out, but hey, Prima Donnas don't exactly look like sticks, y'know.
